Dr. Linda Niedziela has a Ph.D. in Genetics and Developmental Biology from West Virginia University and postdoctoral training in Molecular Genetics at Duke University. She spent a number of years as a research geneticist studying the mutagenic effects of environmental toxicants before combining her research with teaching. Since coming to Elon in 2000 she has focused much of her energy on undergraduate research, becoming involved with service activities on campus supporting undergraduate research plus mentoring many students in research projects that combine molecular genetics and toxicology of contaminants found in aquatic environments. Her model organism of choice is the zebrafish (Danio rerio).
She has been actively involved with Elon College Fellows since she arrived and has mentored over a dozen Fellows. She teaches both the sophomore and juniors ECF seminars and is currently serving as the Mathematics and Natural Science Branch Director.
She has been married over 25 years to her husband, Carl, who also teaches at Elon. Their family consists of a dog, Barkley; a cat, Spice; a retired research African clawed frog, Hop; and a water garden full of goldfish.
